India’s Bold Move: Transforming Oldest Drain in Patna into a Lifeline for Tourism and Local Pride
Patna, the heart of Bihar, India, is finally shedding its old skin. For decades, the Saidpur drain was a symbol of neglect. It carried the city’s waste and a heavy, lingering stench. But today, the air in Rajendra Nagar feels different. A massive transformation is underway to turn this open wound into a grand four-lane gateway. This project is not just about concrete and coal tar. It is about restoring dignity to the locals. It is about welcoming the world to a cleaner, faster, and more beautiful Patna.
This road is a game-changer for Bihar’s tourism sector. It creates a direct link between the New Patna Bypass and the scenic Marine Drive (Ganga Path). Visitors can now reach the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Science City in record time. Previously, narrow lanes and traffic jams deterred tourists from exploring Rajendra Nagar. Now, a 15-minute drive connects the city’s outskirts to its most advanced educational hub. This road makes the journey as pleasant as the destination itself.
The path to progress has not been easy. Officials had to remove over 75 illegal encroachments. They are also relocating 274 electricity poles. Work was briefly paused in early 2025. This was due to a design change to cover more of the drain. The Bihar Cabinet gave its final blessing on July 31, 2025. Now, work is moving at a frantic pace. The stretch near Sheetla Mandir should be ready by January 2026. The entire corridor will open by December 31, 2026.
A road is more than a path; it is an economic engine. Property values in wards 47, 48, 50, and 54 are already rising. Better connectivity means more local businesses. It means more cafes, shops, and services for tourists. By bypassing the crowded Ashoka Rajpath and Mahendru areas, this road breathes life into the city’s interior. It connects historical sites with modern attractions seamlessly.
